Carl “Buddy” Burstell passed away on March 17, 2018 at Columbus County Angel House Hospice Care Center in Whiteville, NC, after an extended illness. He was 86. Buddy was born August 27, 1931 to the late Rose (Washko) and Carl Burstell. He graduated from Irvington high School in New York and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Navy where he served for 4 years. On his return home, he attended New York Trade School and was hired by IBM upon graduation. He worked as a researcher for 34 years until his retirement in 1991. During this time, he also served as a volunteer firefighter for 19 years. He moved his family to Mahopac NY in 1969 and lived there for 46 years before moving to Shallotte, NC in 2015. He was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed bow hunting and fishing, and was a founding member of the Sleepy Hollow Bowmen.
Buddy married his wife of 56 years, Mary (Carvalho) in 1955. She predeceased him in 2011. He is survived by his son Gary, daughters Virginia and Tammy, and grandchildren Tanya, Gary Jr. and Marissa. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen.
