Clayton was born May 9, 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana. On March 3, 1965, he married the love of his life, Judy Lynn Mayes. They were married for almost 54 years.
In 1968, Clayton began working for Western Electric (AT&T) and retired in 1989. He was well known for his tool making skills and later ran his own business, J&M Machining. Those who knew him would tell you he was a hard worker.
Clayton loved fishing and was president of the Western Electric Bass Club. When he wasn’t working, you could always find him at the lake spending time with friends and family.
Clayton is survived by his wife, Judy Mayes; his daughter and her husband, Kim and Randy Whitehead; his granddaughters, Jessica Davidson and husband Adam, Emily Remedies and husband Adam, Sara McCluskey and husband Adam; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Chloe Davidson and Layton Remedies. He is also survived by his uncle, Wilace Wise. Clayton was preceded in death by his mother, Verda Verdel Mayes Jernigan, and son, Barry Clayton Mayes.
A service celebrating the life of Clayton will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019, 11:00 AM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. Chuck McInturf. Visitation with the family will be Monday from 5 until 7 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Woodridge Baptist Church Building Fund.
