She graduated with a degree in music from Central Methodist College and took her first teaching job in Bragg City, MO. In 1955 she moved to Advance, MO to start the band program. In 1964, she moved to Sikeston to be the head of the elementary music department while teaching music classes at Matthews and Southeast Elementary until her retirement in 1988. She also taught singing and piano lessons at her home throughout the years.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Fakes of Sikeston, MO, and Gary and Pat Fakes of St. Louis, MO; one daughter Marcia and Mike Witt of Sikeston, MO; one brother Harold and Pat Smith of Lee Summit, MO; five grandchildren, Lydia and Tim Beck of Warrenton, VA, Gary William Fakes of St. Louis, MO, Madeline, Miranda and Megan Witt of Sikeston, MO; and one great grandson Arthur “Artie” Beck of Warrenton, VA. A niece, Debbie and Jim Gillispie and a nephew, Steve Smith of the Kansas City area.
March 18, 1989 she married Everett Craig who preceded her in death on July 30, 2010. She loved enlarging her family, including her Pastors at Life Church in Sikeston, David and Harriett Craig and all the Craig children and grandchildren that brought such a joy to her life.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Life Church, 951 South Kingshighway in Sikeston MO. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 26th, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. by Pastor David Craig at Life Church in Sikeston, officiating.
Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston, MO.
