Susan J. (Jackson) Arvisais, age 67, of New Bedford passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. She was the wife of Dennis R. Arvisais to whom she had been married for 31 years.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Reid) Jackson, she spent her youth in Fairhaven, was a graduate of Fairhaven High School before moving to New Bedford over 30 years ago.
Mrs. Arvisais was a graduate of Framingham State College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1969. She was then employed as an elementary school teacher in Marlboro and Wareham, MA until her retirement in 1979.
She was a very active member of the St. Julie Billiart Women’s Guild, the St. Julie’s Couples Club and a member of the Bierstadt Art Society of New Bedford. Mrs. Arvisais was a volunteer at the Hallmark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where every Wednesday she made Arts and Crafts with the residents. She was also a member of two book clubs in the Dartmouth Southworth Library and most recently the Fairhaven Library.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her son Philip M. Arvisais and his wife Helen of Dartmouth; two grandsons Samuel and Benjamin Arvisais both of Dartmouth; a brother Russell Jackson of Boothbay, ME; a sister Deborah Johnson of Columbia, MD and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 11am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by her funeral mass at 1pm in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum, Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours will be from 11am to 12:30pm prior to her mass. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
