Biography

Miriam Mary Buchanan (Harley) was born on June 16, 1930 in Philadelphia PA, to John and Emma Harley (Schuman). Miriam was the second child of three children born to John and Emma, preceded by brother Barclay and followed by brother Donald. Emma Harley's first marriage ended with the death of her husband, William Wilkinson, but this marriage resulted in the birth of Miriam's three older siblings Bill, Erma, and Esther. The Harley/Wilkinson's grew up entirely in Philadelphia, but moved frequently between various Philadelphia neighborhoods.

Miriam graduated from Olney High School in Philadelphia in 1948. Shortly after high school Miriam attended Westmont College in Satna Barbara, CA. , where her uncle Willard Harley was a professor. Miriam was only able to afford to attend Westmont for two years, but California retained a special place in Miriam's heart.

Some time after returning to Philadelphia, Miriam met her husband, Robert Buchanan, who was born and raised in Havertown, PA, outside of Philadelphia. They were married on November 26, 1954, with brother Rev. Bill Wilkinson officiating.

After a brief time in California, Miriam and Bob eventually bought their first house in Hatboro PA, in suburban Philadelphia Here they were within at most an hour's drive from their extended families. They raised three children, Greg, Doug, and Melissa, who were born between the years of 1957 and 1963. The Buchanan family was never without a pet cat, and Miriam was known for her love of cats from her childhood and throughout her life.

Miriam was a faithful member of Faith Community Church in Roslyn, where the family attended from the time they moved to Hatboro until the early 1990's. Miriam made lifelong friendships at Faith Church, and it was the focus of her social life.

After her children became older, Miriam had a number of part-time jobs, including working at the Holland Flower Shop, watching neighborhood children after school, and eventually a long stint as a teacher's aid at Wyncote Elementary School in Cheltenham.

After retirement, Bob and Miriam downsized to a townhouse in Horsham, PA, but eventually decided to try something adventurous and they bought a home in a retirement village in Beverly Hills, FL, where two of Miriam's brothers, Bill and Don, were already living. Bob and Miriam enjoyed their adventure, but eventually missed family and the familiar in the northeast, and moved to Jamison, PA. Here, Miriam developed a love of painting, attending weekly classes, and setting up a studio in her Jamison condo. She produced many paintings that adorned her home and those of her family.

After Bob's death in April 2003, Miriam moved to an independent living apartment at Ann's Choice Retirement Community in Warminster, PA, at the end of 2005. While at Ann's Choice Miriam continued to live a full and independent life, living with her cat companion Sagwa, driving her 2000 Honda Accord, visiting family and friends, and volunteering regularly at World Team Mission offices in Warrington, PA.

Miriam lived the last three years of her life at Anns' Choice Rose Garden where she received special care for her failing memory. She was the last surviving sibling of the Harley/Wilkinson clan, and although she no longer remembered many of those she loved in life, she knew her children to the end, and would light up when she saw them or heard their voices. Miriam died one and a half months before her 90th birthday, on May 1, 2020.
