Arthur Thomas Clark
July 27, 1930 – March 23, 2021
Arthur Thomas Clark, 90, passed away on March 23, 2021. Arthur was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 27, 1930, to Arthur William Clark and Bridget (Kiernan) Clark, immigrants from England and Ireland. When Arthur was a child, his father was employed as a butler and the family split their time living on the estates where he worked in Bedminster, New Jersey, and New York City. Later the family settled in Somerville, New Jersey. Arthur graduated from Rutgers University in 1954 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, where he participated in ROTC. He was commissioned to the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the Army Ordnance Corps, serving as a Mechanical Engineer at Detroit Arsenal. It was while stationed in Detroit that he first went skiing with friends from New England. Skiing would become a lifelong passion through which he would meet his future wife, Maureen Tarpey, and one he would pass on to his daughter and grandsons. Arthur was honorably discharged from the Army in 1956 as a first lieutenant. He went on to work in the private sector as a mechanical engineer for Reaction Motors, Purolator Products and Mack Truck, before returning to the armed forces working for the Department of Defense. He retired in 2001, after forty years at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. Arthur was a proud lifetime member of the National Ski Patrol. He was a senior patroller who actively patrolled for over thirty years, the last twenty-four of which were with the Vernon Valley-Great Gorge Ski Patrol (now Mountain Creek) in Vernon, New Jersey. Arthur and Maureen were married for almost 55 years and raised their family in Lake Mohawk, Sparta, New Jersey, living there since 1968. They were active members of the Lake Mohawk Country Club Powerboat Club, where he served as a past treasurer. Arthur was a loyal fan of the New York Mets and Rutgers University sports, and even learned to cheer on Seton Hall University, Maureen’s alma mater. Arthur is survived by his wife, Maureen; sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Alan Melick; daughter, Maura Clark; daughter Eileen Clark Sawyer and her husband David Sawyer; and grandsons Brendan and Jack Sawyer. Due to covid, funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made online to Woods at by clicking the link below.
