Esther Ruby Hemken

Hemken (Davey), Esther (Age 98) passed away peacefully on October 8, 2021. She was born October 13, 1922 in Cadillac, Saskatchewan, where she lived with her parents, Ezra and Francis Davey, and her five siblings. At the age of 15, in 1937, Esther and her family moved to Freeman, Washington where her father farmed. Esther graduated from Rockford High School in 1940. After high school, she attended the Kidman Business School in Spokane, WA. Around that time, she met and fell in love with her soon-to-be husband, Norman Hemken. The two married on November 28, 1942. In the spring of 1947, they welcomed their son, Michael, who was raised on their farm near Rockford.
Esther was active in the Rockford Community. She was a longtime member of the Rockford United Methodist Church and the Rockford Historical Society. She enjoyed traveling with her friends and family and wintered in Mesa, AZ for over 30 years. She also enjoyed oil painting, crafting and spending time with her two granddaughters.
Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Hemken and parents, Ezra and Francis Davey. She is survived by her son Michael (Sandi) Hemken; granddaughters, Alexandria (Jay) Tortorelli, Lisa (Ryan) Jacot; and her three great-grandchildren, Trey, Reid & Elin. She is also survived by her brother, Neil (Donna) Davey of Rockford, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
A memorial service will be held at Thornhill Valley Chapel (1400 S. Pines, Spokane Valley, WA 99206) at 10:00 AM on October 21, 2021, and a private internment at Fairview Cemetery at a later date.
