Mildred Grace Sherlock, was born in Spencer, Nebraska, July 29, 1919. The family lived in Wood, South Dakota where Mildred grew up until leaving home for church ministry at age 15. She joined with 2 other young women and they traveled to several cities and towns singing, teaching and serving in various local churches. The young trio worked in this capacity for several years. On November 7, 1940, at age 21, she married Walter G. Strom an Assemblies of God minister from Tioga, North Dakota. Four children were born to this union.
Mildred and Walter pastured various churches for over 30 years in South Dakota, Montana and Washington State. In 1970, they moved to Kirkland, WA where Mildred worked as a cook at Northwest Bible College and later was a cook and dorm mom for a Christian student house at the University of Washington.
After her husband’s death in 1979, she moved to Spokane, WA and later married John McClendon in 1982. John and Mildred lived in Spokane, WA, Montesano, WA Poulsbo, WA, Denton, TX and Quinlan, TX.
Mildred’s children are:
Ardith Latham – Deer Park, WA; Jerry Strom – Deer Park, WA; Ron Strom – Spokane, WA, and Bobby Strom, who preceded her in death. She has 9 grand children, 10 great grand children and 1 great –great grand child.
Mildred’s Step children are:
Susan Jump – Quinlan, TX; Greg McClendon in CA; Bill McClendon – Fort Collins, CO; 9 step grand children and 2 step great grand children. She is survived by her husband John McClendon.
Mildred’s passion was serving the Lord. She did this in many capacities as a pastor’s wife by leading worship, teaching children, teaching Bible studies, leading women’s ministries, and serving overseas missionaries. Mildred’s home was a respite stop for many evangelists and missionaries who found her home cooking and hospitality a highlight on their travels.
She spent time daily on her knees praying for each and everyone in her family and those around her. She leaves a legacy of prayer, devotion and service to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
