William “Buck” Franklin Howard passed away on the morning of June 23rd in Springboro, OH at the age of 86. He lived a blessed life and his wonderful wife of 61 years, Shirley “Ene”, tended to his every need and kept her every promise to him. Because of her sacrifice, he left this world from his home, surrounded by his family and beloved memories.

He was the last of 7 siblings and while we may be sad and heartbroken, they are all together once again experiencing happiness yet unknown to us. Once again, his voice will sing out and his beautiful music will ring, soothing souls, bringing hope to the downtrodden and lifting praise to our Lord Jesus.

He was born March 1st, 1934 in the hills of Clay County, KY, where at the age of 8 he started picking the guitar and his love for bluegrass music began. His music and songs brought joy, happiness and comfort to countless individuals. He played guitar, dobro and mandolin. His song, Worth it All, was nominated for Southern Gospel Song of the Year.

In 1952, he enlisted in the US Navy and functioned as a Signalman Third Class until his honorable discharge in 1956. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation (European Clasp) Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

In 1959 Buck began his career as a DOD Security Inspector for Monsanto Corporation at the Mound Facility in Miamisburg, OH, where he was employed until his retirement in 1992. His skills as a sharpshooter were recognized as he represented the Mound in numerous marksmen competitions and he was awarded 1st place in 1972 and 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley “Ene” Howard; daughter Jela (Steve) Cook; son Martin Howard; granddaughters Jessica (Jim) Greene, Brooke Howard; great-granddaughters Susan, Norah and Claire Greene; daughter-in-law Gina (Mike) Browning and numerous loving relatives and friends. Buck was preceded in death by his son Steven Howard. Funeral service to be held at 2 pm on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Full Gospel Tabernacle, 8551 Ferry Road in Waynesville, Ohio, 45068. Visitation from 12 pm until the time of service on Saturday at church. Burial to follow at Miami Cemetery, 6379 Corwin Avenue, Waynesville, Ohio. Heaven gained a fine man this week! I had the pleasure of knowing Buck for over 30 years. His devotion to the Lord and praising him with his talented singing voice and instrument playing never failed to be a treat.

I’ve known Buck and Ene Howard “literally”my entire life. We all lived on Market St. in Springboro when I was child and they all became our family and remain so to this day! Buck always teased me by calling me Tammy Wynette and I’d reply...what Buck Owens!! We’ll miss you!

Eddie and I love Buck and Ene so much. We used to visit and play cards with them when Emily was just a baby. We have so many fun, wonderful memories. Growing up in church hearing them both sing. I'm sure my Daddy was there to greet him. He admired Buck so much and Buck was always, always so gracious and kind. Our hearts are broken but still we can rejoice knowing we will see him again.
With much love,
Eddie and Teresa Gillum
