Charles F. “Chuck” Flamini, 74, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at his residence. He was born on June 12, 1946 in Springfield to Oswald Flamini and Fern Sillman. Chuck married Mary Macbeth in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1982 and she survives.

Mr. Flamini is also survived by his daughters, Tonya (Brandon) Douglas of Pittsfield and Beth Ray of Springfield; brother, Gary (Lisa) Flamini of Springfield; grandchildren Annabella Dorrity, Ava and Aubree Douglas, Zachary (Michelle) and Phillip Ray; two great grandchildren: Eliana and Carmela and several nieces and nephews.

Teacher, union activist, school administrator and school board member. "I don't know anyone who didn't like or respect Chuck Flamini," said Mike Zimmers, recalling his former colleague and friend, who died Wednesday. "He touched a lot of lives here and he was a proponent of 186."

A Springfield native, Flamini returned to the city in 1968 after graduating from Eastern Illinois University. His landing spot was Lanphier High School, his alma mater.

A 2005 State Journal-Register article recalled Flamini's sometimes unorthodox style of teaching. He once taught history backward, starting with the current year and working his way back in time. Flamini was principal at Springfield High School when he retired in 2002, but he kept on teaching, including a class called "Dealing with Diversity" at the University of Illinois at Springfield. It dealt with racial, ethnic, gender and sexual diversity.

"We're trying, more than anything, to point out that tolerance is (most important)," Flamini said in 2005. Flamini served as president of the Springfield Education Association, which represents the district's teachers and other employees. He was also an assistant basketball coach at Southeast High School and athletic director at Lanphier, where he was also principal.

Family will receive friends at Bisch & Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen Street, from 4:00pm to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 26, 2021. Mr Flamini was one of my supervising teachers at Lanphier in 1979 when I was a student teacher.. He was well liked by his students. Chuck told me up front to relax and enjoy the experience, and that made it a positive experience.
My sympathies to his family.

Chuck and I ran track at EIU. One of my fondest memories is of the Drake Relays. I still have the souvenir baton with the teams, times, and all our signatures. We placed 4th in the 4x100. What an accomplishment!

Chuck was a great administrator to work for and with. He was a big factor in our ability to successfully turn Lanphier High School into a respected football power in the 90's. My time working with him as a coach and fellow administrator are among my most treasured career memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and the family during this difficult time.

My condolences to the Flamini family. Mr. Flamini was my Principal at Lanphier in 1995/96 and was a great one. Although stern at times, he wanted the best for and out of the students and staff. My condolences again. He will be greatly missed.

Words cannot express how grateful and honored I am to have known Mr. Flamini. He was one of the greats advocating for teachers, students and public education. He was a mentor and friend. They don't make them like Chuck!! He was a straight shooter and was willing to help anyone at anytime. The Springfield Education Association exists because of him and many other juggernauts in th education arena. He will be missed and my heart is heavy.
