

She was born in Springfield, January 17, 1915 the daughter of George G. and Lulu Belle Ray Armstrong. She married Frank Volk, June 26, 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1972. She then married Wilhelm Volk in 1988 and too preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Joe Volk, her brothers; George, Ray, Earl, Roy, Claude, Lee, Glen and Jim Armstrong, and her sister, Dorothy Ross.
Lois worked at Sears and Roebuck as a seamstress. She then became the owner and operator of Lois’ Custom Drapery Shop. She returned to Sears and Roebuck and retired from there in 1983. During WW II, she was a Rosie Riveter at Allis Chalmers. She was a dedicated member of the 5th Presbyterian Church in Springfield where she served in many of the church’s charities and functions.
An avid card player, she was a member of a Pinochle card club for decades. She played well into her 90’s and loved teaching her great grandchildren how to play pinochle. She was a member of the Homemakers, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Blue Ridge Club in Springfield. Lois enjoyed crocheting. During her retirement years, she always carried her crocheting with her wherever she traveled. Many friends and family members are blessed with things that she crochet for them. Her early years of retirement were spent volunteering, traveling and visiting as many friends and family as she could, and later residing at the Presbyterian Home of Springfield.
Surviving are her daughter, Joyce (Dennis) Matthews of Nokomis, IL, her grandchildren; Daniel (Cheryl) Matthews of Nokomis, IL, and Dorothy (John) Padgett of South Elgin, IL, her great grandchildren; Jessica (Pete) Strombaugh, Wesley Matthews, Donald and Keith Padgett, a great great grandchild, Sophia Strombaugh and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen, Springfield, IL where visitation will be Wednesday, January 23, 2012 from 12 noon until time of funeral services there at 2 pm. Rev. William Swaar will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, near Riverton, IL.
