Mary K. Shannon, 87, of Springfield, passed away at 3:31 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at her home. Mary was born June 3, 1923 in Lees Field, VA, the daughter of Prather and Victoria Gentry Carter. She married Howard Shannon on September 23, 1950 in Springfield; he preceded her in death in 1990. Mary held various jobs over the years. She was a devoted member of St. John's AME Church where she was named deaconess in the early 2000's. She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lois Morgan; and eight siblings. She is survived by four children, Sharon Hopson, Gordon (Ginny), George (Robinetta) and Dennis Shannon all of Springfield; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one godchild; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011 at St. John's AME Church, 1529 E. Capitol, Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011 at St. John's AME Church with Rev. Charles Jackson, officiant. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
