ST MARTINVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Virginia Smith Barras, age 86, at 10:00 am Monday, November 4, 2013 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church. Fr. Rusty Richard will be the celebrant. Mrs. Barras will be laid to rest in St. Michaels Cemetery at a later date.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home of St. Martinville on Sunday from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm, with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm by the Catholic Daughters. The funeral home will reopen on Monday from 8:00 am until 9:30 pm.
Mrs. Barras was born March 15, 1927 in Fairmont, West Virginia to the late Albert Smith and Martha Vincent Smith and was one of five children. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at her residence, with her family at her side.
Virginia was retired from the United States Government with over 40 years of service. During those years, she worked as a payroll clerk with both the Dept. of Agriculture in the Pentagon, and at the NASA Michoud Facility in New Orleans.
Virginia was also very active with many organizations and volunteered her time as well. She volunteered with the St. Martin Correctional Facility Triad Program under then Sheriff Charles Fuselier, and also at the Petit Paris Museum at the Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, VFW Post 3267 and 4215 (where she also belonged to the Cooties Org. and Pup Tent 7 & 9 an elite group of Ladies), American Legion Post 133 and 377, and the Busy Bee’s. In her spare time she enjoyed watching games shows, especially the old shows on Game Show Network. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her children, Mary Barras Armstrong of Kenner, Herbert Paul Barras, Jr. of River Ridge, and Allen Lee Barras and wife Karen of River Ridge; grandchildren, James Suter, William Armstrong, Darlene Armstrong, Natasha Barras Krummel, Kerrin Nicole Barras, and Andrew Marino; fourteen great grandchildren with one more expected in March; her brother, Charles V. Smith of Mineral Wells, TX; sisters, Elenor Nolan of Crayville, TN, Hannah James of Wallace, NC, and Mary Louise Merchant of Hemet, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Paul Barras, Sr.; and her daughter, Catherine Anne “Kitty” Barras.
Pallbearers will be Shannon Barras, James Barras, Ricky Jude Simon, James Suter, William Armstrong, and Andrew Marino.
