He was a U.S. Army veteran. He then served as a firefighter, and retired in 1976 from Engineering Proving Grounds in Newington.
For the past 35 years, Ralph and his wife owned two businesses located in Stafford, H&H Auto Repair and H&H Trucking.
He belonged to Moose Lodge 1655 of Fredericksburg and American Legion Post 290 of Stafford.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Cropper Heflin; son Bernard W. Heflin of Stafford; and daughter Phyllis Frantz (Fred) of Overland Park, Kan. In addition to his children, he is survived by eight grandchildren, Shawn Heflin (Tammy), Bernice Smarr (Kevin), Heather McCormick (Richard), Joshua Heflin (Rebecca) and Matthew Heflin, all of Stafford, Joe Biondolillo, Freddy Frantz (Audrey) of Kansas and Erika Seward (Shawn) of California; and 10 great-grandchildren, Austin and Bradley Smarr, Hunter McCormick, Morgan, Megan and Joshua Heflin Jr., all of Stafford, Kira Raine and Henry of California and Gabby and Fred of Kansas.
Mr. Heflin was preceded in death by four sons, Ralph M. Heflin Jr., Milo F. Heflin and twins Larry and Gary Heflin; father Milo B. Heflin; mother Ella L. Heflin; sisters Eunice Nashwinter and Viola Iverson; and brother Eldon B Heflin.
He loved to collect old cars, pocket watches and clocks. One of his favorite old cars was a 1977 Ford truck that he recently had restored.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Heflin, Joshua Heflin, Matthew Heflin Ryan Stanley, Ritchie Sowers and Daryl Kellison and junior pallbearer Austin Smarr.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, 186 Shelton Shop Road, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18. Interment will be at Stafford Memorial Park.
