Michael J Hannigan of Greenwich, CT and South Harwich, MA died on 9/12/19. He was born in New York City on 9/22/29 to Michael Hannigan and the former Sarah Tolan. Michael received his Bachelor’s degree from CCNY in 1951 and served in the US Air Force as a cryptographer from 1951 to 1953. On September 11, 1954, Michael married Eleanor Donlon, his wife of 58 years who pre-deceased him in 2012.
Michael began his sales career selling Boroughs adding machines to businesses in Manhattan. He moved on to Frieden where he continued in sales. In 1962, Michael joined Leasco Corporation where he leased office equipment to companies in the tri-state area. In 1970, Michael and his wife, Eleanor, founded Gateway Leasing Systems. He and his wife operated Gateway for 31 years until he retired in 2001.
Michael was a member of the Knights of Malta for many years and participated in several pilgrimages to Lourdes providing assistance to people with serious illnesses. He also served as a Eucharistic minister as a member of St. Michael The Archangel Church in Greenwich.
In South Harwich, MA, Michael founded the Red River Beach Association. Dozens of neighbors joined the association and succeeded in persuading the Harwich Zoning Board to maintain the residential character of the community.
Mike and Eleanor lived in Yonkers, NY from 1959 until 1982 where they raised their four children. They moved to Greenwich in 1982. Mike and Eleanor are former members of the Racquet Club in Yonkers, NY, Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck, NY, Kings Way Golf Club in Yarmouth Port, MA and Lost City Golf Club in Atlantis, FL.
He is survived by his four children, Michael (Lorraine) of Sarasota, FL and Greenwich, CT, Stephen (Wanda) of Trumbull, CT, Robert (Jeanne) of Riverside, CT, and Jean Moran (Marty) of Millwood, NY; eight grandchildren, Mark, Caroline, Rob, Meghan, Katie, Julia, Stephen, Jack and three great grandchildren, Gavin, Reagan and Colin. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen Taylor of San Francisco, Eileen Leighton of Hudson, OH, his brother John P Hannigan of Marco Island, FL and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
There will be a wake on Friday, September 20, at Leo P. Gallagher & Sons in Stamford (2900 Summer Street) from 4pm to 8pm. There will be a funeral Mass at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Greenwich on Saturday, September 21 at 10:30am (469 North Street).
