Grace Strahan Zoephel died peacefully at home at age 97 on April 16, 2018. Born on September 12, 1920 in New York City she was the daughter of the late Grace Dagmar and Joseph C.J. Strahan. Beloved wife of 42 years of the late Karl H. Zoephel, she was the dear mother of her daughter, Carolyn (Cricket) S. Lockhart and her husband, James B. Lockhart III of Greenwich, CT, son, John C. Zoephel and his wife Katherine Blake of Warren, N.J., and son, Carl (Biff) S. Zoephel of Simsbury, CT. She was the devoted grandmother of James B. Lockhart IV and his wife, Virginia, Grace L. Djuranovic and her husband, Marko, Jennifer N. Zoephel, John C. Zoephel, and Melinda S. Zoephel. She also had five great-grandchildren who were the lights of her life: James B. Lockhart V, Nicholas S. Djuranovic, Alexander B. Lockhart, Margaret G. Djuranovic, and Clara B. Lockhart.
She was a faithful friend to many. A 19 year resident of Edgehill Lifecare Community in Stamford, CT, she grew up in New York City and resided in Short Hills, NJ for 46 years. Grace graduated from Todhunter School, co-owned and taught at by Eleanor Roosevelt, and Finch Junior College, both in NYC. Amongst many volunteer activities she was a Board Member of Project Hope of N.J., the Garden Study Club of Short Hills, The Short Hills Republican Committee, Chairman and long time member of New Eyes for the Needy, and founded Twig # 7 in Short Hills for the Overlook Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Short Hills Branch of the D.A.R., a member of the Center for Visual Arts in Summit, N.J.,a member of the Finch Alumnae Association, and a charter member of the Short Hills Club.
A great lover of music and art, Grace was a talented painter in both oils and watercolors. She loved to travel, play the piano and speak French. She was an incredibly generous, friendly and spirited woman who treasured family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation at 733 Third Avenue, Suite 510, New York, NY 10017.
