Douglas Robert Carnegie, 91 Cost engineer, devoted father and grandfather Douglas Carnegie, known to family as Bob, passed away at home on Dec. 2, 2018. Mr. Carnegie was born in Brooklyn and was brought to Staten Island at age two. He grew up in Dongan Hills, then married the love of his life, Marie Dellavalle, and settled in Sunset Hill. She predeceased him in 1986. After graduating from St. Peter's High School, Bob joined the Army during the end of World War II. He then attended Manhattan College and Cooper Union, where he earned his degree as a cost engineer. He worked for several engineering firms, including Foster Wheeler, Braun Engineering, Halcon, and retired from Scientific Design. He designed and wrote software bought by Japan, which assisted in their economic development. Bob was a talented artist, painting landscapes and still lifes, then focusing on family portraits, which filled his home. Always creative, he made his own cards and cartoons and had a great sense of humor. He also refurbished furniture as a hobby, creating many beautiful pieces. He was an impressive water skier, and helped teach his daughters, niece, and nephews how to water ski. He was also an avid reader of science, history, and biographies. After retirement, his grandsons became his focus. Almost every weekend he took them to plays, movies, walks in Clove Lakes, lunches, and never missed a game at their bowling, baseball or softball leagues. He was always willing to be of service to his family, friends, or community. Several family members recalled him as a prominent influence in their lives and a role model. Bob was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, the Holy Name Society, and St. Vincent DePaul. He volunteered much time to the needy, delivering meals for holidays. His kindness and good-heartedness extended to many charities. Mr. Carnegie will be greatly missed by his daughters, Diane and Elayne Carnegie, as well as his son-in-law, John (Jack) Scanlon, and his grandchildren, Alexandra Schueler, Ryan Scanlon, and Kevin Scanlon. He also leaves behind nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends throughout the country. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, at Sacred Heart Church at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited to visit Thursday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home.
