Gary Anthony Azevedo of Dorrington, California passed away peacefully a few hours before the new year began on December 31, 2016. He was born on February 24, 1948 at the Hanford Sanitarium in Hanford, California to the late Arthur and Barbara Azevedo. He was a graduate of Thomas McCarthy Catholic School and a member of Hanford High’s (HUHS) Class of 1966. While at HUHS he lettered in both football and track. He never forgot his days on the turf of “Neighbor Bowl” and the other locations throughout the valley where he and the Bullpups played out their passion for the sport. He was also a proud member of the Hanford High Future Farmers of America and was a member of a nationally ranked Meats Judging Team. After graduation he enrolled in the Food Science program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He started his lifelong career journey with a position as a Sanitation Manager at Kerns Foods in the Southern California area and married Karen Shenkel in September of 1968. They divorced in the early seventies and he moved back to the Hanford area where he had several farm-related careers until he moved to Antioch, California to pursue lifelong interests in woodworking and marine-related work. For the next three decades he explored these crafts and worked as a boat refinisher with his uncle, and as a machine engine repair technician, and served as the Harbor Master at New Bridge Marina Harbor for over two decades. After his retirement in October of 2013 he moved up to Dorrington, California. Retirement afforded him time for his other passions of “tinkering” in the yard, reading, watching football, being an amazing companion to his three rescue cats and a great friend to many in his housing community. He is survived by his daughter, Lora Kathleen Daniels and her husband Joe of Stockton and his grandsons Roman Sotelo, Adam Daniels and granddaughter, Rosemary Daniels, his brothers Robert Azevedo, and Michael Azevedo and his wife Suzie Azevedo of Hanford and will be forever loved by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews and many good friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Henry and Rose Azevedo and Frank and Bell Martin. A casual luncheon and celebration of Gary’s life will be held for friends and family at The Dynasty restaurant, 441 10th Avenue Hanford, California on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from noon to 3 PM. Internment at Calvary Cemetery will be private. In lieu of floral tributes the family asks that you remember him through donations his name to the Hanford FFA Parents Club, 120 E. Grangeville Blvd., Hanford, CA 93230. Donations go to support Hanford High FFA students in their judging and vocational pursuits.
