September 13, 1925 – September 7, 2018
Nearing his 93rd birthday, Haye B. Chan succumbed to the aftermath of colon cancer following a courageous five-year battle.
He was the third of ten children born to the late Chan Shang Yee and Won Shee Chan. He spent his early years immersed in the family fountain, Fook Chong, located on Washington Street in Stockton's Chinatown. In addition to Stockton schools, including Edison High, Haye attended Chinese School after hours to help keep his native tongue and culture alive.
Serving in the Army for two years, Haye performed his duties as an airplane mechanic. He worked for over 30 years as a U.S. postal carrier, before retiring in 1988.
Gung Gung enjoyed traveling, and over the years he relished trips to Hawaii, Stockton's Sister Cities, as well as excursions to China and Mauritius, where he visited with relatives. Haye had a deep love of family and friends, and was generous to a fault. He was hard-working, good-natured, loyal and always ready to lend a hand. When it came to making repairs, Haye could MacGyver anything! His warm, genuine smile is forever tattooed on the hearts of those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Eva (Rodney Yee, also deceased), Bing Wai, Henry, Charlie (Violet, also deceased), and Albert. He is survived by his wife, Conde, siblings, George (Toshiko, deceased), Bertie (George Bledsoe, deceased), Robert (Stella, deceased) and Hannon (Irene), his children, Tony, Noreen and Stan (Chris), his grandson, Mattia Del Monaco (Brittany), great-grandson, Lucca Del Monaco, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Chinese Cemetery, at 202 W. Mathews Road, French Camp, CA on September 21, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Haye's memory to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204 or Jene Wah, Inc., 238 E. Church Street, Stockton, CA 95203.
