On June 30, 2019 Mary Eunice Pollock at the age of 100 passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family in the Hospice Wing of the Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City, AZ. Fortunately, on March 27, 2019 her family and friends were able to celebrate her 100th birthday at Post Acute & Rehab Center in Peoria, AZ where she was a resident for the past four years. She had a wonderful time sharing humorous stories, blowing out her candles, and drinking champagne!
Eunice was a real people person with a larger than life personality and
the Irish gift of gab. She could learn a person’s whole life history within 10 minutes of speaking with them, making them feel warm and comfortable in her presence.
Eunice was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1919 to James and May Cooney. She was an only child devoted to her parents. She attended Peabody High School and majored in Secretarial Studies. During World War II, Eunice moved as a single woman to Washington, D.C. to work as a secretary for the Army in the Chemical Warfare Department. After the war, she returned to her parent’s home in Pittsburgh, PA and met her future husband Michael Pollock at a public dance at the Grotto Dance Hall in Northside. He swept her off her feet with his smooth dance moves and they were married on Oct 22, 1949. Raising three children (Mary Christine, Eunice Marlene, and Michael James) Eunice was a loving and devoted wife and mother while taking care of her elderly parents in the same household until they passed away.
She returned to work later in life to become the secretary to the head of the Pittsburgh Welfare Department before she retired.
In December of 1979, Mike & Eunice visited their best friends Ted and Marty Dreveniak in AZ, fell in love with the area and bought a house in Sun City, AZ. They enjoyed many happy years in the company of their friends swimming, golfing, partying, vacationing, celebrating life events, attending church functions, and gambling at the casinos.
Eunice is survived by Mary Christine (Gregory) Rice of Coraopolis, PA, Eunice Marlene Zyontz of Monmouth Junction, NJ and Michael James Pollock of Pittsburgh, PA. Also her loving grandchildren Gregory (Tina) Rice , Samantha Zyontz and Nathan (Jennifer) Zyontz and her great grand children
( Zhouhana, Wenqiang, Tobias, Lilianna, and Mairi)
Eunice was an active member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Parish in Sun City, AZ and donate regularly to the Catholic Charities. She loved music, theater, crossword puzzles and being a member of the Red Hat Ladies and the Irish Club for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
