It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Lorraine Rose Hooge (nee Bowdery) passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2023, with her family by her side.
Lorraine was a beacon of love, kindness, and compassion, leaving a deep imprint on the lives of all those fortunate enough to know her. Her loss leaves a void that can never be filled, but her legacy of love will continue to inspire us all. She had a heart that was always open, a spirit that was endlessly giving, and a smile that could brighten the darkest of days.
Born in Penticton on February 9, 1923, Lorraine’s Okanagan roots stayed with her long after she moved to Vancouver. Her favourite places were those close to water, beaches, and sunshine. A skilled seamstress, baker, knitter, gardener, and “card shark,” she had a lifelong love of learning and was always keen to try new things. (She even took up tennis at the age of 80.)
She is predeceased by her four siblings, Jack, Eileen, Russell, and Crystal, and her husband of 60 years Wally Hooge. Lorraine and Wally married in Vancouver, raised their sons in Burnaby, and later moved to White Rock, where they formed many lasting friendships in their retirement years. They enjoyed extensive world travel, daily seaside walks, a rich social life, and time spent with family. Lorraine will be greatly missed by her sons Richard (Leslie) and Terrance (Cheryl); her grandchildren Kristi Wilkins (Ryan), Megan Reid (Jason), Sunni Hooge, Maddie Ghavimi (Samrad), Peter Hooge, Julia McMullin, and Kristina McMullin; and her great-grandchildren Taya, Lucas, and Paige Wilkins, and Mason and Mila Ghavimi. “Nana” was the glue of our family, and her values and lessons will continue to guide us in the years to come.
Our deepest gratitude goes out to Beata Sobolewski, who was an incredible caregiver, companion, and cherished friend to Lorraine in her final years.
As we mourn the loss of this beautiful soul, we also celebrate the incredible life of a person who touched the lives of so many.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
