OBITUARY

Rita May Corsano

August 30, 1926March 21, 2020

The family of Rita Corsano, 93, regret to announce her death on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Waterford Heights, New Waterford. Born in Rouge Harbour, Newfoundland, August 30, 1926, she was the daughter of Annie (nee Jennings) and Wallace Giles. She was the eldest of five children. In her late teens, Rita moved to Sydney. For a number of years she worked in ladies’ fashion retail on Charlotte Street. Following her marriage in 1951 she primarily was a full time wife and mother; however, for some considerable time she was an Avon representative. Rita was predeceased by her parents, her loving and devoted husband, John, who she lost early in 2018, and infant son, John, brothers Harvey and Earl and a sister, Ida Horwood. She is survived by her son, Gary Corsano (Theresa), daughter, Elissa Lamont (Ernie), grandsons Ryan Lamont (Michelle) and Tyson Simms (Katie), granddaughter, Breagh Corsano (Nicholas McPhereson), great grandsons, Vinny, Isaac and Louis Simms, her sister, Viola White and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Rita was happiest in her home surrounded by family and friends. Her hospitality found expression in a cup of tea at the kitchen table, a family dinner, or a large gathering of family and friends who came to celebrate and share a special occasion. Although a painful exercise for our father to endure, Rita enjoyed baking. In particular, she was well known for her signature carrot cakes which were a “hot ticket” item over the years at various fund raising teas and sales in Sydney. Rita also had a passion for gardening. She took great pride in her flowers and it was for her a great source of joy as passersby stopped to admire her handiwork; and like the baking, our mother’s encounters with nature were not easy on our father. Rita was able to enjoy her home in the northend of Sydney for over 50 years; but in the last year this was no longer possible as she required additional assistance. Her family was so fortunate to be able to entrust her care to the loving, professional staff at Waterford Heights. To all of you we send our sincere thanks and gratitude. To the many friends who continued to call her and visit her to share “a lovely cup of tea” we thank you. You all know how much those moments meant to her and brightened her days. Unfortunately, due to the present coronavirus 19 pandemic, we are unable to gather together at a wake or funeral mass to celebrate Rita’s life. When life returns to normal, perhaps we will have an opportunity to gather in her memory. For now, memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com. Donations in Rita’s memory may be made in favour of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, 40 Cabot Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia, B1P 4C8 or to a charity of your choice.

Gary, Elissa and family,

We are so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was a beautiful, generous lady who always had a smile. Your mom and dad were always nice to us while we were growing up in the north end. Whether it was your home on Amelia Street or the cottage in Ben Eoin, they always made us feel welcome. Please treasure the happy memories.

Dear Elissa, Gary and Family,
Our deepest sympathy and love to you all. A sad time for sure.
Your mother has been a part of my life for about 70 years! I remember, as a young child, being at your parents wedding reception at the cottage in Ben Eoin and how beautiful I thought your mother looked. Over the years the Renzi family spent so many wonderful times at their home and ours. You all were an extension of our family, even extending to our daughter Marla’s family.
Rita is happy now to be with her “Johnnie” again. Salute!!

Love, Angela and Bruce
