Dora Phillips Peters, born June 18, 1922 of Sylacauga, AL, passed away on March 16, 2018 at the age of 95. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Sylacauga on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Rick Patrick, Dr. Larry Morrison, and Rev. Rodney Frost officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Marble City Cemetery.
Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by her husband James Morriss Peters, Jr., mother and father Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Phillips and 14 siblings. She is survived by two children, son James Morriss Peters, III and wife Regina Peters of Jacksons Gap, AL, daughter Ann Elizabeth Onihill and husband William E. Onihill of Birmingham.
Mrs. Dora Peters graduated from Phillips High School, Birmingham and attended the Reynolds Business College. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sylacauga since 1946. She was President of WMU when Rev. Weaver was senior pastor in the early 1960’s. Mrs. Peters also served as 2nd Vice President of Main Avenue PTA, Treasurer of the 2nd District Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs and past President of the Matrons Study club and past Treasurer of the First Baptist Church Metallic Club for Seniors.
Mrs. Peters had an illustrious work career. During World War II, she worked at E.I. Dupont in Oakridge, TN and St. Paul, MN as support in the development of the Atomic Bomb. Later, she was an office manager and bookkeeper for a private contractor and then worked in the Unemployment Office for the State of Alabama where she retired.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church, 10 South Broadway, Sylacauga, AL 35150 Bereavement Fund.
