Daniel Gene Gourd or “Uncle Boone” to his family and friends, was born on Monday, October 7th, 1974, in Tahlequah, OK, the son of Steven Anthony and Virginia (Washington) Gourd. He grew up with three brothers, Shannon, Randolph, and Michael, and one sister, Vanessa. He attended and graduated from Hulbert High School in 1992, and then began his university studies at NSU. He started his family and was the proud father of three sons and three daughters, Nicholas, Daniel, Blaine, Jaliyah, Danayah and Arissa. They were his pride and joy, and he made sure that everyone knew he loved his children more than anything. When he wasn’t busy working constructing and building pole barns, Daniel was out doors. There was nothing compared to a day spent gigging crawdads and fishing, swimming, floating, or just enjoying the day outside. He could whistle like a hawk and had a fifth sense in nature, he could hear and see things before anyone else could. There was always a good reason to take the kids camping or hiking up the hill. He was an accomplished guitar player, and he could play anything from a standard acoustic guitar and bass, to every kind of music from rock, country, or blues and his all-time favorites, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Pink Floyd. He taught his son Blaine aka “Ernie Gourd” everything he knew about playing guitar. He was the kind of neighbor and friend that always made you happy by his presence. He loved to make people laugh, and had an entire book of sayings that he would just randomly use. It didn’t matter to him if he had known you all of his life or just met you, you were his friend. His family remembers that he had the ability to build something from nothing, and could make the best fry bread while never actually watching his hands work the dough. He was the biggest supporter of OU football, and never missed the chance to yell for the home team. Holidays were the happiest for Daniel, he loved any excuse to gather with his family and spend the day talking and sharing a meal. He was a member of the Keener Baptist Church in Lost City. He passed from this life on Wednesday, July 1st, 2020 at his home in Lost City, OK. He was 45 years old, and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his father, Steven Anthony Gourd, his maternal grandparents, Whitewater and Marie (Gourd) Washington, and his paternal grandparents, Jonas and Vivian (Dreadfulwater) Gourd. He was also preceded in death by his uncle Rudy Gourd, his cousins, Eli and Russell Gourd, and his aunt Patricia Potts.
Those left to cherish his memory include his mother of the home in Lost City, Virginia Gourd, and his children, Nicholas Oxendine (Gourd) of Tahlequah, Daniel Russell (Gourd) of Ft. Gibson, OK, Blaine ”Ernie Gourd” Ray Bailey, Jaliyah Luethje (Gourd), Danayah Jade Gourd, and Arissa Danielle Gourd all of Tahlequah, OK. He leaves his brothers and sister, Shannon Elliot Gourd and wife Mary of Park Hill, OK, Randolph Jonas Gourd and Gina Potts of Hulbert, OK, Michael Anthony Gourd of Hulbert, OK, and Vanessa Danelle Jackson and companion Brandon Jones of Stilwell, OK. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention. Daniel was going to be a very proud grandfather in October to a baby boy. The music is sweeter in heaven, Daniel is playing the perfect riff with the perfect guitar. And as he left this earth we assume he said, “love ya later!”
