Lucille Studie-Samples, or Lou to her many family and friends, was born on Friday, September 18th, 1936 in Barber, OK, the daughter of Swimmer and Lydia (Swimmer) Studie. She had six brothers and four sisters, Thomas, Johnny, Jimmy, EJ, Cornbread, Shirley, Mozell, Sylvia, and Katie. She grew up around the Barber, Caney and Stone Chapel communities. Her mother died when she was 18 years old, leaving Lucille to raise two sisters and one brother still left at home. She graduated high school then began her working career with Helen Brooks, and it was here she met Terry Samples, and it was love at first sight. They married on July 2nd, 1965 in Tahlequah, OK, and together they would raise a family of two sons and three daughters, Gary, Geraldine, Linda, Tina, and Terry. She worked at the Carters Landing Café and Bar and also at the Ozark Nursery, then attended school to learn shorthand and finally as a Seamstress at the Cherokee Sewing Factory in Tahlequah. She also found time to attend Rainbow University and started working on her art degree, she loved art and was talented with many forms of art. She could sew, quilt, crochet, and do crafts of all sorts. She loved to be outdoors, doing a little fishing or working in her flower gardens. She was always ready to take a little Branson trip or play a little Bingo or Dominos. Lou’s most important part of her life was her family, she adored every one of them and the time she spent with them was precious. She loved to gather them all with her to celebrate a holiday or a have a picnic, didn’t matter as long as she had her family around her. There was always sweet gospel music or the old time country tunes playing in the background. She kept to herself until she got to know you and then she was a friend for life, non-judgmental, loving, giving, and always ready to welcome you into her home. She was an avid collector of just about everything, and was always on the lookout for new items. A Christian by faith, Lou attended Cherokee Home Mission, Carter Baptist and Barber Baptist Churches for her walk with God. Her life wasn’t always easy, and she had more than her fair share of hardships. Yet her smile and laughter was something Lou always tried her hardest to put forward. Her health began to leave her and her family was there to care for her like she had always cared for them. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from her earthly labors on Sunday, May 10th, 2020 at her home surrounded by those she loved. She was 83 years old and will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her Mom and Dad, her maternal grandparents, George and Lou Swimmer, her Husband Terrance Samples in 1993, her son, Gary Samples in 2015 and her daughter, Tina Samples-Hamilton in 2015. She also joins a granddaughter, Summer, a very special Aunt, Lucy Isaac who was a second mother to her and an uncle, Clue Swimmer who always looked after Lou.
Those left to cherish Lou’s memory include her children, Geraldine Scott and husband Earnie of Welling, OK, Linda Daugherty of Park Hill, OK, and son Terry “Punkin” Samples and wife Cindy of Tahlequah, OK. She also leaves her brothers and sisters, Thomas Studie of Muldrow, Johnny Studie of Welling, Jimmy Studie of Welling, EJ Buzzard of Los Angeles, CA, Cornbread Studie of Stokes, OK, Larry Studie of Peggs, OK, Shirley Fourkiller of Tahlequah, Mozell “Moe” Turner of Tahlequah, Sylvia “Pete” Wilson of Tahlequah, and Katie Mahaney of Welling, OK.
