Alice Mae Fiedler Nied, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, departed this life on November 10, 2018 in Tallahassee, FL. She was born July 21, 1950 in East Chicago, IL and grew up in Gary, IN. Alice graduated from Edison High School in Gary, IN. After high school she attended the St. Bernard Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL where she received a diploma in registered nursing in 1971. She received a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in Chemistry from Purdue University in 1986. Alice completed her Master of Science in Nursing in 1994 from Indiana University and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2009 from the University of North Florida. She had the distinction of being the first DNP in the Tallahassee area.
Alice held various positions in nursing throughout her career including medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric and addiction rehabilitation, and the operating room, but her passion was education. She taught nursing at Ivy Tech in Gary, IN. She was the Director of Nursing at Highland Community College in Freeport, IL where she later became the Dean of Science and Health. Alice moved to Jacksonville, FL and was the Director of Nursing at Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ). She retired from Tallahassee Community College after serving as Director of Nursing then Dean of the Healthcare Professions division and Director of the Ghazvini Center for Healthcare Professions for eight years. After retirement she returned to FCCJ (now Florida State College at Jacksonville) as interim Dean of nursing for several months.
Alice was a member of various professional organizations, committees and boards. She served in many leadership positions, including treasurer for the National Organization of Associate Degree Nursing. Alice received many awards and recognitions throughout her professional career, including the Woman of Excellence award from Stevenson County, IL. She was also a two-time recipient of the Capital Regional Medical Center (Tallahassee, FL.) Nurse of Excellence award and was inducted into the International Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau.
Alice was an exceptionally talented quilter. She loved making and giving quilts as gifts to newborn babies, friends and their families. She also was an avid reader and loved movies and traveling.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret Fiedler and her two brothers, Don Fiedler and Alan Fiedler. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Tom Nied of Tallahassee, FL. Two sisters, Donna Corigan (Mike) of Villa Park, IL and Ruth Ann Fielder (Ellen) also of Villa Park, IL. Son, Troy Nied (Susan) of Henderson, NV and daughter Jody Herrling of Black Earth, WI. Three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two golden retrievers, Samantha and Stosh.
The visitation will be on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home 700 Timberlane Rd., Tallahassee, FL. The services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More, 900 W. Tennessee, St. Tallahassee, FL 32304.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to a scholarship that will be established for healthcare students at Tallahassee Community College and the Emerald Coast Golden Retriever Rescue, Lynn Haven, FL (www.ecgrr.com).
