Jewel Daughtry Strickland, 94, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2020, at her home in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by her loving family. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Arvis K. Strickland.
She is survived by sisters, Ruth Daughtry Cook, age 100, and Lula Daughtry Long, age 96, and husband James, all of Cairo, Georgia. She is also survived by three children: Linda Strickland Adams of Tallahassee, Florida, Paul W. Strickland of Aliso Viejo, California, and Judy Strickland Krueger and husband John of Augusta, Georgia. She maintained a close relationship with three former daughters-in law, Vanessa Rose, Vicki Lytle Wisneski, and Vicki Pusey Strickland. Mrs. Strickland had nine grandchildren: Schylea Strickland, Kevin Strickland and wife Astrid Bowlby, Alycia Abdulla and husband Skip, Jennifer Adams Martin, Amanda Adams Stephens and husband Lance, Angel Kendrick and husband Jeremy, Skylar Strickland, Zoe Strickland, and Jeremy Crane and wife Erin. Her great-grandchildren include John Hardy, Jamie Norton and husband Nicholas, Corey Abdulla, Brittany Abdulla, Meghan Brown and husband Derek McDonald, Logan Martin, Cody Moore, Jessica McGhin and husband Dalton, Nicholas Stephens, Karighan Kendrick, Tyler Ouzts, Zack Kendrick, Darin Krueger and wife Emily, and Jessica Krueger. Mrs. Strickland was blessed with one great-great-granddaughter, Sloan Isabella Norton, and had several “adopted” grandchildren: Dawn Brock, Trisha Vautaw, Christopher Lytle, wife Amy and daughter Emalyn.
Mrs. Strickland was born in Grady County, Georgia, near Whigham on October 12, 1926. She was the youngest of the 13 children of Zack William Daughtry and Isa Dora Sanders Daughtry. They named her Ruby Jewel, a name that she didn’t particularly like, but her children loved it and nicknamed her “The Rube.” The name, her sincere love and kindness, and her sweet personality endeared her to both family and friends. She was a true Southern woman through and through.
She married her sweetheart Arvis during World War II on July 6, 1944. After her husband’s discharge, they made their home in Bainbridge, then Augusta, Georgia, from 1947 until 1989, when they relocated to Tallahassee. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Augusta where she lived the last 12 years of her life. Mrs. Strickland was a homemaker dedicated to loving and caring for their five children and several grandchildren. She also assisted her husband in their businesses through the years. She spent many hours raising beautiful flowers and was an amazing Southern cook. Mrs. Strickland loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with all her heart and was a member of the Climax Second Advent Christian Church since 1946. She exhibited the qualities of the Virtuous Woman described in Proverbs 31 and her value was surely “far above rubies.”
Her nephew, Reverend Wayne P. Cook of Titusville, Florida, will be officiating the funeral service on Monday, October 26, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in the Culley’s Chapel at 700 Timberlane Road in Tallahassee.
