was surrounded by friends and family.
Ana Maria was born Sept. 1, 1922, in La Yaguiza, San Franciso de Macoris, Dominican Republic, to
Segundo Manuel Castillo and Florinda Taveras. She was raised by her paternal grandmother,
Clementina Cortorreal Castillo, who died when Ana Maria was 9 years old. She then lived with a
series of aunts, since her father was very busy working on his farm. Fortunately as a teenager she
went to live with Josefina (Chichina) and she was very happy with this family.
Ana Maria was very gifted in many areas, such as cooking and sewing, she made all of our clothes.
She could see an outfit and it would magically come out of the sewing machine! She worked as a
sample maker at Liz Claiborne in the Fashion District in NYC! She could knit, crochet and draw, her
expertise was with flowers and butterflies. She had a green thumb. She was very good with babies
and children. Although she was only able to have one biological daughter, Elizabeth Knowles. Carrie
Mendoza, considers her to be her only mother and Ana Maria loved her like a daughter. She helped
to raise the following babies, Maritza, Anthony, John, and cared for Cathy. These beautiful babies
brought life and happiness to our lives.
Ana Maria had the great fortune of being taken in by the Taveras Family, Adela , (called Mami by all),
upon her arrival in NYC. Mami was her Fairy Godmother. She met Minerva , Mami’s daughter, by
chance, at NYC airport Minerva later became my Godmother. This beautiful family, offered her a
loving home. They helped her get a job and were instrumental in setting up her wedding to my dad.
Ana Maria cherished friendships made in Dominican Republic, she was literally raised with Antonio,
she is Godmother to both of his sons, Anthony and John. Another cherished friendship was with
Fulvio and Maria . She was Godmother to Fulvio Ramon, who has three brothers, Anthony, George
and John. Maria is now in heaven with her son Edward.
Ana Maria also had the great fortune of marrying Jesus Ramon Knowles, who was a devoted
husband. He came from a beautiful family, parents, Joseph and Albertina, and his brothers, Henry
and Joseph, who are all waiting for us in heaven. The wives, Ines and Alice, and children from these
brothers are also very good people, Joseph, Max, Alice, Henry, Edward, Belinda and Julio. Waiting for
us in heaven are Albert, Joanne and Alice Vega Knowles.
Ana Maria believed in Jesus, she read the Bible. We were able to recite her favorite Psalms 23 and
91 to her as she went to be with Jesus.
We are grateful that during this Covid pandemic we were able to care for her at home. She was
lovingly cared for by the most beautiful aides, Marta, Maribel, Dermia, Maria Doris, Lidia and Maria. I
am forever grateful to these lovely ladies.
Thank you in advance for helping us remember Ana Maria on her First Anniversary Memorial. Due to
Covid we were not able to hold a funeral.

John y cuidó a Cathy.
Conoció a
hermanos, Anthony, George y John.
Henry, Edward, Belinda y Julio.
Maria Doris, Lidia y Maria.
Aniversario. Debido a Covid no pudimos realizar un funeral.
