OBITUARY

Dr. Sharadamma

December 12, 1935January 9, 2021

We are sad to inform the demise of our dearest and beloved mother Dr.G.K.Sharadamma.

She said in a recent note addressed to all those who loved and idolized her: "I am lucky to float among all of you as a friend, sister, mother, grandmother, and daughter." This was our dear Dr. G.K. Sharadamma. She not only graced each of us with her love and unassuming nature; she also traveled further than what would seem possible as seen through her education, profession, and life's work. She was born to G. S. Kempaiah and B. Thimmakka in Gulur, a village in Tumkur district approximately 45 miles outside Bangalore city in India. She graduated with a medical degree from Mysore Medical College in 1962. She was among the first in her family to become a doctor and go to college. She worked as an OB-GYN for the government of her home state, Karnataka, for twenty years, and became an entrepreneur by starting her private medical practice. By the time she retired in 1983, she had delivered upwards of 1000 babies, focusing her service to women in rural communities in Karnataka. She immigrated to the United States after her retirement in 2000 to live with her daughters’ family and her beloved sister. A true modern renaissance woman, she was a published poet who also embraced the internet and social media to share her thoughts on life and keep in touch with all those she knew, ensuring they weren't alone during times of need.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughters Dr. Shanthala Narasimha and Sandhya Srinivasan; son Justice N.S. Sanjay Gowda; sons-in-law Dr. Vijay Narasimha and Dr. Himanand Akkannappa; daughter-in-law Dr. Kala Sanjay; granddaughters Dr. Shruthi Narasimha, Neethi Narasimha, Shravya Gowda, Megha Akkannappa and Mansi Akkannappa; and grandson N.S. Sriraj Gowda. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Nagarathna Kempaiah, and three brothers G.K. Ramakrishna, G.K. Laxman Gowda and G.K. Sreenivas. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband N.S. Srinivasan.

She loved and lived deeply, empowering everyone she encountered with her powerful presence and character. She will be missed more than words can ever express.

May her soul rest in peace.

I am so fortunate to have grown up around you during my childhood, whenever anyone in the family were ill you were always there to take care. I have learnt so much from you, also the way you managed work and home was truly an inspiration for me. We visited Wimbledon when you came to London and listen to beautiful stories about Mama and his love for Wimbledon and how he spent his days in London while studying. I am so grateful for the time I spent with you and will cherish the memories always. You will stay in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace atte, we love you so much.
