Ruth Parkey Fugate, age 101, was born June 4, 1919 and died June 24, 2020, at home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Whitt G. Parkey and Statia Chadwell Parkey; husband Frank R. Fugate; son Wayne Fugate; and grandson Whitt Fugate.

Ruth was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and The University of Tennessee. She was employed by the Middlesboro School System for ten years and retired from the Claiborne County School System.

She had a strong love for her family and her farm. Ruth took great pride and pleasure in managing the farm with her grandson Whitt Shuford. A special thank you to her long time caregiver, Missy Ray who became a beloved family member. Dr. Nicole Shields, Claiborne Medical Center, and Amedisys personnel also deserve much appreciation for their professional care. Their support and care allowed her to live at home and remain an integral part of her family. Graveside service was Saturday June 27, 2020 at the Fairview Cemetery. Minister: Rev. Vince Krauss, Pastor of Tazewell Methodist Church; Pallbearers: Joe Brooks, Brent Clark, Allen Mayes, Alan Parkey, Patrick Turner and Charlton Vass. Coffey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Fugate was a special friend of my Uncle General and Aunt Jess' family to their daughter Bethel, wife of John Fugate. Ruth had a quick wit, a lot of charm and bravely shared good cheer on social media for Lincoln Memorial University for many years after the Fannie Mae Crisis of Hillary Clinton & Obama's campaign!
My condolences to Elizabeth, Whitt, Cindy, Lily, Becky and families...

I met “Mrs. Fugate” when I interviewed for a special education position in 1982. I used to tease her she hired me out of desperation because she had been searching for a speech pathologist for many years. She strongly supported, encouraged and trusted me as we rebuilt a speech therapy program for the public school system. She never backed down from what she believed was the right thing, but there was never any doubt you were appreciated and respected as a professional. She was also a lot of fun. I will always think of her with much fondness.

Elizabeth, you have been a very faithful daughter, providing the care and support for Aunt Ruth for many years. Both you and she experienced the loss of most of your family. It is now time for you to be surrounded by your loved ones.

Elizabeth, Whitt, Cindy and families...
I am saddened to hear of Aunt Ruth"s passing. At 101 years of age I shouldn't be shocked but I was. Guess I thought she'd live forever. You were blessed to have Aunt Ruth all these years. I pray that God will give you strength, comfort and peace now and in the days to come. Cherish your memories and each other. With love, Becky, Michael, Susan and Torie Beth.
