He grew up in the town of Winnsboro, and was involved with 4-H showing cows. This was a big deal when growing up on a farm. Kirby graduated from Winnsboro High School, in the year 1947. He attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA. In July of 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force, which sent him to Mitchell Field in the town of Garden City, Long Island, New York. He loved to dance, laugh and enjoyed travel. He loved to get into the kitchen and cook and made a "Mean" Pecan Pie. He eventually would out shine his wife when he cooked a pot of spaghetti sauce. He tried to replicate his mothers cornbread but he just could not quite get it right. He thought college football was the "Real" football and he loved LSU, Louisiana State University. He felt right at home on his boat in the waters of Long Island. In 2014, Kirby and Grace would move to Lady Lake, Florida, where he would live out the rest of his life. His siblings in the order of birth are as follows; Samuel Edgar Lee, Jr., Lucye Lee Brocato and Pauline (Polly) Lee Stitt.
