Verona (Vonnie) Hengst, born March 14, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio, entered into eternal rest on January 21, 2019. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Eva Bosko; sisters Patty Schuler and Ann Todd; brothers John, Joe, Steve, Paul, Michael, Edward, and Adam. Vonnie grew up in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and in 1948 she moved to Texas. She was an active member of the Russian Orthodox Church, and she became an active member of the Methodist Church upon marriage. During World War II, at the age of 16, Vonnie served the war effort by welding radio parts for the U.S. Navy, and then worked as an operator for the telephone company after her high school graduation. She then dedicated the rest of her life to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Vonnie always invested her life in people, not things, which was evident in the way she made the time to serve and love on those around her, including faithfully serving her church and community. Her sense of humor and smile quickly lit up any room. Vonnie and Gene were blessed with the opportunity to travel the world: visiting 50 foreign countries and 48 states. Her hobbies included many types of handwork including painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, and completing puzzles. She enriched the life of all who were blessed to know her, and we are so grateful to have shared her life.
Vonnie is survived by her husband and loving companion of 70 years, Gene Hengst; daughters Jacquelyn High and husband Manuel, Deborah Murphy, Cynthia Tenney and husband Howard, and Jeannie Hengst; grandchildren Jennifer, Sarah (Greg), Drew (Ashley), Gene (Natalie), Hayden (Angela), Haley, Katie (Jeremy), Kelly (Chris), and Chelsey; and great-grandchildren Preston, Jackson, Lucas, Grayson, Landen, Andy, Annabelle, Caleb, Emma, Logan, Nathan, Abigail, Emerson, Caroline, Kellan, Ellie, Addison, Halle, and Eva. Vonnie is also survived by her brother, Andrew Bosko, and many close relatives and friends.
