Janyce Rae Hurtt

March 31, 1938April 21, 2021

Surrounded in love by her children and Pastor, Janyce Rae Hurtt went to her heavenly home on April 21, 2021 at the age of 83. Born on March 31, 1938 in Page City, Kansas to Albert and Lola Baker she was the oldest of five siblings who she now joins in heaven. Jan spent her life in service to her family, the elderly, the homeless, her political party and mostly to her church. She was an eternal optimist and her mantra was “where there is life there is hope” and had open arms for anyone in need. Jan was an entrepreneur and ran an award-winning small business, Jan’s Advertising Specialties, for over 37 years until retiring in 2016. Her laugh, smile and spirit will be missed. Jan is survived by her three children, James Craig Hurtt, Tamara Sue Strange and Bradley Scott Hurtt; her grandchildren Dustin James Hurtt, Brandi Leigh Hurtt and Michael James Bennett; her step-grandchildren Arden and Finn Miller; and, her great grandchild Madison Leigh Hurtt.

Services will be held on May 8, 2021 at 10am at Advent Lutheran Church. Due to COVID restrictions space is limited, but they will be live streaming it on Facebook for those unable to attend in-person.

Hello Hurtt Family!
Your mom was very special to me and my brother. We have been members of Advent Lutheran Church since we were small children. Jan always had a smile and a laugh for us! We will miss her but know she is in God's kingdom and we will see her again.
Jan (along with all her other duties) made Sun Tea the day before church and would bring in a heavy container each week to share with the congregation! Gosh that was sweet!
Sending Peace and Love to your family!

Jan was one of the first people at Advent that welcomed myself and my husband when we first joined the congregation. She will be sorely missed by all.

Our family knew Jan at church for almost 20 years, and for many of those I sang next to her in the tenor section of the choir. She was always ready with a smile and a warm greeting, for us and for our daughters. We were also on many church committees together, where we sometimes didn't agree but we always got along regardless. We will miss her very much.

Craig and family, I never met your Mom but she sounds like a person I would've liked. As I told Craig the other day, having a Mom die is so hard. I've worked around death for quite a few years and it's still hard to find the right thing to say. I think because you can't make folks feel better, all you can do is let them know you care.

I was the Director of Music at Advent for 3 years in the early 1980s. Jan sang tenor in the adult choir that provided music for one of the Sunday morning services. She had a beautiful voice, and an even more beautiful attitude, about music, life, God.

She and I became friends during those 3 years, and stayed in touch after I left the position. Her optimism and faith, and her caring, fiercely supportive brand of friendship, carried me through some difficult times in my own life - and were the qualities that made her simply fun to be around.

I am so grateful and proud that we were friends. I know she is making music with more joy than ever, now.

Sing with the angels, Jan. I love you.

I did not know Mrs. Hurtt, but am friends with her son, Craig. I am very sorry for this family's loss. I lost my mom in 2010 and can relate to the heartache involved. Hardly a day goes by that I am not reminded of her. You never really get over the loss, it just becomes a little easier to deal with over time. Keep her close in your hearts and cherish the times you've had with her. My condolences to the entire family. I wish I could give Craig a big ole hug!

Jan was always a welcome, friendly smile to my family on Sunday’s. She appreciated, encouraged and enjoyed listening to Maren and Robby play the violin and cello at church. She also was kind to us all and took an interest in how we were doing. We will miss her.
