Isis Abdul (aka Ruby Lee Roby) was born on May 28, 1944 in Portland, Oregon into the union of Sallie Vanarsdale Roby and K. C. Roby. She attended Boise Elementary School and graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1960, she married Clyde Phillips and into that union Andre Emilio Philips (aka Muhammad Akram Ra’oof) was born on December 24th. She moved to Oakland, California in the early 1960s and went to college for graphic design. She was an accomplished graphic design artist and enjoyed her craft. While in Oakland she worked for the Black Panther Party and often talked about the positive work they accomplished in the community.
She moved back to Portland, Oregon in the late 1980’s where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved spending time with her son and grandsons and was quite proud of their accomplishments. During the last 10 years, she enjoyed volunteering at the Portland Art Museum where she found peace and solitude. She loved genealogy and spent considerable time researching her family tree. She was able to connect many family members as a result of this endeavor.
She was preceded in death by her Brother Nathaniel W. Carter, Jr., Sister Brenda Pulliam; Father, K. C. Roby; Ex-Husband Clyde Phillips; Brother-In-Law, Julius Cowan; Nephews, Christopher Carter, Julian Cowan, Renard Pulliam, Jaime Vasquez, and Erin Cowan; Mother, Sallie M. Carter; Step Father, Nathaniel W. Carter; and her “Beloved Son”, Muhammad A. Ra’oof.
She is survived by her Brothers, Elvis L. Carter (Billie Lou) of Portland, OR, John M. Carter (Martha) of Pittsburg, CA, Andrew L. Carter and Philip L. Carter of San Francisco, CA; Sisters, Shirley A. Cowan of Portland, OR, Veronica A. Carter of New Albany, OH, Rhoda Carter of Portland, OR and Julia R. Carter of Phoenix, AZ; Daughter-in-Law Aster Ra’oof of Portland, OR; Grandsons, Diya Ra’oof (Nita) of Portland, OR; Benyam Ra’oof (Hillary) of Olympia, WA; and Mubarak Ra’oof of Portland, OR; Great Grand Children, Diya Ra’oof, Jr., Kareem Ra’oof of Portland, OR, and Malik Ra’oof of Olympia, WA; Aunt, Sarah Vanarsdale of Portland, OR, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
