Janet Sue Phillips, loving wife for 43 years, was born on October 9, 1949, in Toledo, Oregon, and died June 2, 2015, at her home in Newberg, Oregon, surrounded by her family and those things in life she so dearly loved. The oldest child of Mary and Donald Kuenzli, Janet spent her early years growing up in Newport, Oregon, graduating from high school in 1967 and enrolling in the fall of that year at the University of Oregon. She met, fell in love, and married her husband Mike in the fall of 1972 and embarked on a life adventure that included giving birth to three boys, teaching at the Lake Grove Women Bible Study for over 20 years, and rescuing numerous pets and animals, all while developing a passion for horse ownership later in life. As a woman of strong faith, family was the most important thing in her life and she raised "her boys" to be outstanding young men by being their counselor, mentor and friend in addition to being their mom. One of her greatest rewards was acknowledging the three wonderful daughter-in-laws that joined the Phillips family through the marriage of each of her sons. Janet was a beautiful woman who was energetic and could light up any room just through her presence. She was always graceful, compassionate, caring and had a passion for life that was truly remarkable. Even though she now has claimed her place in Heaven, she will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald, and is survived by her husband, Mike, her sons Grant (Shenell); Blake (Michelle); and Jordan (Erin); her mother, Mary; her sister, Marilyn; numerous nieces and nephews, and an enormous collection of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 20th at the Newberg Christian Church with a Celebration of Life reception immediately following. All who knew her are invited to attend.

I was another of Janet's many childhood friends, from when we were very young bugs together until I left Newport after junior high. Classrooms, clubs, etc; the occasional weekend walk on the beach. A wonderful girl, and by all accounts it sounds as if she's been a fabulous woman, wife, and mom. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing; she was special; it hurts. Mary, I'm so very sorry; your family was a happy spot for me. Barton (Marv) Waring

I fondly remember all the time I spent at the Phillips' house growing up. It wasn't hard to see that Janet was a loving mom and a gracious host. She was also very genuine in how much she cared for others. Jessica remembers Janet as being always full of life, like when they watched lacrosse games together and Janet cheered on the "baby beavers" when Jordan was coaching at Corvallis. Our thoughts are with the entire Phillips clan.

Janet was my neighbor when we were ages 12-15. I enjoyed our talks together on our daily half-mile walks to school. I admired her strength of will. I was very touched when Janet attended my mother's funeral a few years ago. She invited me to come ride at her home, and now I regret that I never took that opportunity.

We have many fond memories of Janet- talking with her about her passion for dogs and horses and hearing how proud she was of raising and being a mother to her three boys. We will never forget her smile, sweet voice, and thoughtfulness. Sending peace to Mike, Grant, Jordan, Blake, and the family. May memories of Janet continue to warm your hearts forever.

Our last visit with Janet was a week after our baby boy, Emmett was born. We visited her at home in Newberg. It was a pleasant spring day. Janet was in wonderful spirits speaking about memories of raising her boys, the special toys of theirs she kept, her love of horses, and the story behind pretty objects in her home. She was so happy and smiling. Her love of faith and life, even after her diagnosis was truly admirable. Janet truly lived each day to the fullest. We will never forget that beautiful day in Newberg. The pure gratitude and joy that Janet expressed to us as tears rolled down her cheek while holding our newborn in her arms. It was such a special day and Janet was a beautiful soul...both will never be forgotten.
