Shirley Grace Hindy (née Walker)

On 1 June 2019, Shirley Grace Hindy (née Walker) passed away after a short illness at the age of 87 in Scarborough, Ontario.

Born in Toronto on 29 September 1932, Shirley was a life-long soldier in the Salvation Army, attending Toronto 1 Corps, Lisgar Street Corps, and Toronto Temple where she met and married “her Doug” before calling Scarborough Citadel Corps her long-term church home on the first Sunday in June 1959.

Throughout her life, in her own quiet way, Shirley constantly showed the convictions of her deep faith and her belief in the notion of “heart to God and hand to man.” Moving from Toronto’s west end in 1954 to a brand-new house on the edge of the city in Scarborough, she taught Sunday School, sang in the Songsters, and helped organize and execute many Corps activities including the 25th Corps Anniversary, and the ongoing “Take-a-Break” series for the ladies of the Corps. She was instrumental in the annual Corps-level Red Shield Appeal, coordinating the delivery of materials and collection of donations. As office secretary during Scarborough Corps’ rebuilding campaign, she helped keep the vital operations running apace until the Corps returned to their current facilities.

Even “retirement” couldn’t stop her from serving her community and those in need of spiritual nourishment. She poured her creativity into the Women’s Coffee Break ministry, helping organize the monthly program, as well as constructing the table and room decorations each month.

Shirley stands as an example of quiet determination, faith, and of devotion to the mission of service to those who need service most.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Percy and Gladys, and her sister Lillian. She is survived by her sister Doreen, her loving and beloved husband Bramwell Douglas (“Doug”), and is dearly missed by her son Christopher and his wife Dana. Shirley was sister to Bill, aunt to Bonnie, Randy, Tara, Kevin, Kathy and Kenny.

Shirley was a wonderful lady to know and I will miss her very much. She meant a lot to the ones who knew her at Scarborough Citadel and of us who were in the Songsters along with her.
Since Pearls' passing the original group of Songsters are missing a lady who did so much and gave so much, it has made a void in the congregation.
It was a very sad day, when they could no longer attend on Sundays, but our thoughts and prayers were always sent their way.
Take care Doug in knowing that Shirley is now singing with the Angel Choir and still making decorations for the banquet halls

While it has been some years since I have seen Shirley I will always remember her as my Sunday school teacher and later in my life when we sang in the Songsters together. She was always an encouraging voice to me.

Dear Doug and Chris:
So sorry to know of Shirley’s passing. A loving, faithful wife and mother she was. Shirley will always be remembered as a true Christian lady who loved the Lord deeply and thrilled to serving Him through working with children in the Sunday School and singing in the Songsters at the Toronto Temple and Scarborough Citadel. We always enjoyed chatting after practices and sharing our joys and concerns about family and friends. Cherished memories, indeed. You will miss her immensely; yet rest in the promise of peace and hope as she lives with her Saviour.
