Filipe's home village is Chorao, Illias, Goa, India. He was educated at St. Anthony's School in Goa and at St. Joseph's in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Filipe's love of mechanics started early when he became an auto mechanic at the age of 19. He then went on to oversew the maintenace of all equipment at the University in Tanzania.
Filipe and his family moved to the South Bay in 1971 from Dar-es-Salaam. They came to Southern California for a better life and first stayed with friends in Manhattan Beach. Upon seeing the beauty of Manhattan Beach, Filipe and his wife, Maria worked hard to purchase their home there. Filipe loved the beach. He also liked to figure out how things worked and his occupation as an auto mechanic was just the challenge he needed. Filipe was always in the garage taking broken equipment apart and putting them together in working order. If you had something that did not work, Filipe was your man!! Filipe was very proud when he built the family's television after completing an electronics course. This was all done in his spare time after work.
Filipe was always on the go and after retiring in 1996, he filled his days with bike riding to the beach, trips to the library to get the most recent action movies, helping friends with car problems and waiting for grand children. When they came in 2002 and 2004, Filipe and Maria were beside themselves with excitement and joy. Now added on to an already busy day, were stroller trips to the park and thousands of opportunities to teach Sara and Katherine about science and how things work.
Filipe is survived by his wife Maria, his daughter Peg, her husband Damian and their two bright and beautiful grand-daughters Sara and Katherine. We love you Dad and Grandpa and will miss our garage chats.
