I first really met Sheila when I was invited to join the book club more almost exactly 30 years ago. I had seen her around CDC since we were both working in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. But through our many book club meetings, we got to know each other and I realized what a wonderful person she was. She had been through a lot of difficult times, but the single characteristic that she saw her through all of these was her optimism. She always looked at the better side of the person or situation. We can all learn from that because that's what gave her resilience and happiness throughout her life. When she met Sheila Mincey, the love of her life, we all celebrated. I remember when they had an open house to celebrate the wonderful condo they purchased together--they served an impressive low country boiled dinner and the place looked like a decorator had designed everything, yet it was so homey and welcoming. After that evening, I knew then that they were going to have a great life together. What a pleasure it was to be part of her life--I will always remember and miss her smile and sunny attitude.
