Dwight Liberty was born in Sioux City, IA on December 17, 1953. He was the fifth child of Zelma and Maynard Liberty. He lived in Tucson, AZ when he was young. He married his beloved wife, Penny Liberty, on Christmas Eve in 1978 in Auburn, IN. In 2019, he returned to Tucson with his family to enjoy his retirement in the sun and spend time with his grandsons and children.
Dwight spent three decades working at Tower Automotive in Auburn. He was able to drive anything with wheels and did maneuvers with the fork truck that should not have been physically possible. He has always been a great friend. He was kind and caring with an excellent and sometimes wicked sense of humor. He was an expert storyteller and loved to talk about his time as an extra in cowboy movies, being a lookalike for Kenny Rogers, and the fun he had with the Park Avenue Crew, friends and family.
Dwight never knew a stranger and talked to everyone in the grocery store and all his neighbors in the backyard. He loved his friends and family fiercely and was always willing to lend a hand or an ear to anyone in need. He called himself the Coupon Queen and always kept a pantry full of soup and cookies on hand. He loved gambling, buffets, late night talks with his grandsons, ketchup on tacos, and peanut butter cookies. In his later years, he developed a love of love stories – quite surprising for a man without a romantic bone in his body.
Dwight was preceded in death by: Zelma, Maynard, Skip, and Suzy Liberty.
Dwight is survived by Penny, his beloved wife of 43 years, as well as his children Tim (Joanna) Liberty; Teata (Nathan) Dailey; grandsons Dalton and William; siblings Kenny, Rick, Chuck (Kris), and MaryBeth; Mary Woods, Kelly (Darin) Solis, Tom (Laura) Woods, and Eric (Kathy) Woods, and numerous dearly loved members of his extended family; and friends he loved like family.
A memorial service will be held in Tucson, Arizona on July 1, 2022, at Funereria del Angel South Lawn. Memorial donations: Optimist International Foundation or American Lung Association.
Special thanks to Beth Carney, his respiratory therapist, and the ICU staff of Northwest Hospital, Houghton Road, for their outstanding care and compassion.
