Larry I. Weinstein, 61, of Tucson died February 25, 2014 of complications from ALS. Larry was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 8, 1952 to Milton and Doris Weinstein. He attended elementary school, junior high and high school in Cleveland, and graduated from Cleveland State University with a degree in special education. He settled in Tucson, Arizona and began a long and dedicated career in the Tucson Unified School District as a special education teacher and Special Olympics coach, working with intellectually disabled high school students at Howenstine High School and Cholla High School, and learning-disabled students at Mansfeld Middle School. In 1991, he began working on his master’s degree in educational leadership through Northern Arizona University and completed his degree to become a certified school administrator. He then worked at Catalina High School as the Special Education Department Chairperson and at Rincon High School as a special education job developer. Larry retired from the Tucson Unified School District after 30 years and chose the hotel business as his second career. He was working as a front desk supervisor at the Westin La Paloma when he was diagnosed with ALS. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Weinstein. Larry is survived by his wife of 30 years, Meg McNamara; his sons Joshua Weinstein and Zachary Weinstein; his father, Milton Weinstein ; sisters Anita Malkin and Karyn Weinstein, and his brother Paul Weinstein (Robin). He is also survived by his nieces, Anne Weinstein, Sara Weinstein, Wendy Mason and Torrey Aiken and his nephews Neil Malkin, Michael Fay and Connor Mansager. Larry faced his devastating diagnosis of ALS with grace, humor and perseverance. His upbeat, positive nature, his sense of humor and his beautiful smile also went a long way in helping those that loved him deal with his illness. Special thanks go to Casa de la Luz Hospice and its staff, who lovingly cared for Larry until the end of his life. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at East Lawn Palms Mortuary and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial donations in Larry’s name be made to the ALS Association.
