Gerold Joseph Wertz

May 16, 1919September 20, 2019

Gerold (Jerry) Joseph Wertz passed away Friday, September 20, 2019 in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was born May 16, 1919, to Blair and Josephine Wertz near Aberdeen, South Dakota. After graduating from Central High School in 1938, Jerry Joined the South Dakota National Guard, 147th Division. After three years, he was called to active duty and his unit left for what was supposed to be one year at Fort Ord. One year became over four years because of the outbreak of World War II on December 7, 1941. Jerry was sent to the South Pacific for over three years, and he returned home to Aberdeen in June of 1945. It was then that he met the girl of his dreams, Elaine Forsting. They were married in 1946. Jerry enlisted with the United States Reserves and was retired from the Army as a Master Sgt. after serving 21 years. Jerry worked for the United States Postal Service in Aberdeen, and he and his family moved to California when he was transferred to Fullerton. After 28 years with the USPS Jerry moved his family to Twin Falls in 1976. Jerry’s life was one of service; he was very active in the community. He was a tutor at Lincoln School for Kindergarten through third grade for The America Reads Program that is supervised by the Office on Aging at CSI. Grandpa Jerry enjoyed helping the students become better readers. On Veteran’s Day, each year he would speak to the third graders about his experience in the South Pacific during WWII in the fight against the Japanese. After 13 years of tutoring, he was forced to retire because of hearing loss. Jerry was elected Board Chairman for the Twin Falls Senior Citizens. He served as a public address announcer at the Twin Falls County Fair. He joined the American Legion and is still active after 34 years. He held the office of Post Commander for six consecutive years and was District 5 Commander for one year. Senator Crapo awarded him in 2007 Spirit of Freedom Award. President George W. Bush awarded him the President’s Call to Service Award for serving in the American Legion Post 7, which included programs that helped the community and returning veterans. One of the highlights of Jerry’s life was a 19-day trip to Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Palestine. Jerry was preceded in death by Elaine, his wife of 69 ½ years. His two daughters Becky Bress of Clearwater, Florida and Cindy (John) Hayden of Chubbuck, Idaho survive him. He has one Granddaughter, April and twin Great Granddaughters. He is also survived by a niece Kay (Wally) Wright of Twin Falls and a sister-in-law Helen (Harold) Wertz of Hemet, California Jerry will be cremated and the ashes buried in South Dakota. The Family would like to thank the employees of Syringa Place and the staff from Auburn Crest Hospice for their care and compassion while taking care of Jerry.

Jerry was a long time customer of mine at the bank and after he stopped regularly coming I would go visit him at Syringa. We would sit for hours and just chat about life and we would talk about family and his wife. I truly enjoyed my visits with Jerry and I will greatly miss him. He will forever remain in my heart. My condolences to his family. He was truly a great man ❤️❤️
