Robert W. Fries - Obituary

Robert W. Fries, age 87, of Twin Falls, went to be with the Lord he loved so much on, Wednesday afternoon May 1, 2013 with family and friends at his side. His most recent struggles included COPD and a second stroke he suffered on April 28, 2013.

Robert (Bob) was born on June 7, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Richard and Anna Fries. He was the second of 7 children. There he attended elementary and high school, graduating from high school in 1942. Bob joined the Navy after high school and was training to be a pilot in the Navy Air Corp when World War II ended. While stationed at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, for flight school, Bob met Betty Herzig whom he adored and they married December 6, 1945. They were happily married for 63 years before Betty succumbed to Multiple Myeloma in 2009.

After Bob was discharged from the Navy, they spent their first 16 years of marriage in Minnesota. Then moved to Twin Falls, Idaho in 1961. As a veteran, Bob was offered a job in sales and service in Minnesota which developed into a career managing farm stores. He finally retired in 1985, selling his share of D & B Supply in Twin Falls.

Bob was an active member of St. Edwards Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was on the parish council and was in the choir. Bob had a beautiful voice and was often asked to sing at weddings, including his daughter Maureen’s, son Bob Jr’s weddings and that of a grandchild, Kimberly. He was also active with Magic Valley Dilettantes.

Bob loved flying. He was a pilot and member of the QB Flying Club and the Twin Falls Flyers. His love of flying started when he was in flight training school in the Navy. It was fifty years later that he could afford to take up flying again and he continued flying for 20 more years. He particularly remembered a recent opportunity to ride in the open cockpit of the N3N-3 trainer plane like one he trained in.

Bob and Betty made many lifelong friends through church and social activities. They were also fortunate to be able to travel in their later years visiting the Caribbean, Italy (Vatican City), Ireland, England, Czechoslovakia and especially enjoying time in Hawaii. Bob enjoyed playing cards including bridge and pinochle and poker with his poker buddies. He loved a good joke and always had one to tell after you’d told him yours. He kept a collection of Ole & Lena stories that he was always ready to share with whoever was around. When playing family games Bob could always come up the highest scrabble score putting an amazing word on a ‘triple word score’ space, but he was rarely able to beat the women in the family when playing Chicken Foot.

As a member of the American Vecturist Association, Bob enjoyed collecting transportation tokens. Hunting and fishing were also favorite pastimes. Many trips with all his children involved fishing, hunting and time spent at his cabin at Murphy’s Hot Springs. The family remembers camping for vacations rather than exotic destinations.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his son Charles Fries (Connie); his parents Richard and Anna Fries; two brothers, Arnold and Herb; and one sister, JoAnn Schultz.

Bob is survived by 4 children; Candy (Colleen) McElfresh of Twin Falls; Maureen Crowell of Twin Falls; Robert Fries, Jr. (Colleen) of Garland Texas; and Sue Fries of Portland Oregon and 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Survivors also include sisters, Dorothy Walsh of Brainard, Mn., and Marion Peters of Pensacola, Fl; and a brother, Richard (Joanne) Fries of Coon Rapids, MN.

The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Luke’s Magic Valley for their loving care in his final days, and his grandson Nick for his care of his grandfather after he suffered his first stroke in 2011.

A Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, 2466 Addison Ave. East, Twin Falls on Thursday evening May 9, 2013 with Deacon Jim Herrett reciting. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 161 6th Ave. East, in Twin Falls on Friday May 10, 2013 with a luncheon for family and friends following in the St. Edwards Parish Hall. A private gathering of family and friends will be held at 2:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Park for the interment. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Angel Fund at St. Edwards Catholic Church, the St. Edwards Catholic School Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

Services are under the direction of Trent Stimpson and staff at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, Twin Falls.

That pinochle group that Bob and Betty were in didn't just bring together couples, it brought together several families from St. Edward's. We all remember the fun times they shared, and that we all had half a dozen sets of 'parents' watching us. We celebrate the wonderful life Bob had, and how much he meant to us all.

As a child I remember Bob and Betty Fries joining with LeClairs, Hacketts, Osterkamps, and my parents to play cards, have a laugh or two, and support each other as families were raised. Bob was the vocalist at my brother Steve's wedding reception - What a long life he had - touched so many lives - and I am so glad that he was there with my parents. Blessings to the remaining family members, and may your memories of your dad, brother, uncle give you comfort.

Thoughts and prayers for all of Bob and Betty's family. All of us in the Sass clan have wonderful memories of time well spent with the Fries. I will always recall Bob with a twinkle in his eye, ready laughter, and a humorous perspective. And his wonderful voice in St. Edward's. May his warm spirit wrap around you with a father's blessing.
