Gilbert E. Gonzalez
July 18, 1931 – January 9, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert E. Gonzalez, Bear Watcher on Thursday January 9th, 2020.
Gilbert was born in Alpine, Texas. He went to school at Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso, Texas and was President of his graduating class in 1949. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating high school and was a Navy Corpsman during the Korean War. He served 4 years and was very proud of his service to his country. While he was serving, he took up boxing and represented the Navy in amateur events.
After leaving the Navy, he landed in California after being honorably discharged where he continued his education and eventually began a career In Social Services.
In the Early 70’s, Gilbert became an executive director for a center which offered many social service programs to the community.
While working for the community center Gilbert enjoyed his time off exploring his Native American Roots where he embraced his spirituality and openly shared his experiences with others. Besides enjoying his culture, he enjoyed making Native American jewelry, traveling, spending time with friends, his dogs and most of all his great-grandchildren.
Gilbert is survived by his 5 children Lisa, Susie, Gilbert, Carmela and Matthew, his 3 grandchildren Raymond, Joe and Leslie and his 3 great grandchildren, Sophia, Samantha, Noah, Michael and Joshua
Gilbert Gonzalez to family and friends was known as a spiritual leader, a friend, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. He enriched life of those around him, he was spiritual, and loved to be out doors. He had a connection with nature and the universe itself. Gilbert leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories.
