Biography

Estela Gutierrez De Samayoa was born in Guatemala on June 23rd of 1923 and later moved to Los Angeles, California in 1969 where she lived for the rest of her life. Estela lived to be 96 years old before she passed. When she was only in her thirties, Estela unfortunately lost her husband and became a widow. However, she was left with her daughter Lourdes and son Sergio to love and care for. Later both her daughter and son had children of their own and made Estela a grandmother. Her daughter Lourdes had 5 children: Eddy, Marisol, Joseph, Patty, and Jesseca Turcios. Additionally, her son Sergio had 2 children: Karyna, and Sergio Samayoa. As a result, Estela gladly helped care for all 7 of her grandchildren who she loved unconditionally. Shortly after, Estela’s son Sergio moved out to live in Arizona with his children and wife while Estela stayed in Los Angeles where she spent the majority of her life living with her daughter Lourdes and her 5 grandchildren. Tragically, soon after Estela witnessed her son Sergio died of cancer in his thirties, leaving behind his two children and wife.

Despite the distance between Estela and her grandchildren from her son’s side, she always kept in touch with Karyna and Sergio through phone calls as well as occasional visits between them. In addition, while living with her daughter Lourdes, Estela was not only a grandmother to her 5 grandchildren from her daughters side, but she also became a second mother to them. Estela devoted herself to her grandchildren by taking them to school, cooking, cleaning, going on outings, being a role model, and instilling ethics, morals, and principles amongst them. Because of this, all of her grandchildren love her unconditionally, see Estela as an absolute inspiration and are forever grateful for all that she did.

As the years went by and Estela reached 90 years of age, unfortunately, she had an unforeseen accident where she fell down and broke her hip. At this point she was in need of 24 hour care and was therefore admitted to a convalescent home called Berkeley Convalescent Hospital in February of 2014. It was here where she was under the care of nurses 24 hours a day for 7 days a week throughout the remaining 6 years of her life up until November 3rd of 2019 when she passed away at 7:00 p.m.

Although her time on earth has come to pass, she will never be forgotten. Estela was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who will always be remembered. Throughout her life, Estela endured many hardships such as the loss of her husband, son, brothers and sisters. Despite all this, she stayed strong, positive, kind, grateful, and present in every moment of her life without any complaint which is why she was such an inspiration to us all. She was the type of person that touched people’s hearts simply with her presence and was willing to offer a helping hand to anyone she met no matter who it was.

Estela truly was a one of a kind human being, and she was like an angel to her family and everyone who was lucky enough to have known her. It has been an absolute blessing for God to have given her 96 years alongside her loved ones, and we can all certainly take comfort knowing that she can now finally rest in peace in God’s kingdom accompanied by the warm embrace of all who were waiting patiently for her and the love and admiration of those she left behind. May God bless her soul now and forever.
