Edwin Hanford RIDER Jr.
June 7, 1926 – February 18, 2018
Edwin H. Rider, Jr., “Bud”, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home in Vancouver. He was born June 7, 1926 in Kelso, Washington to Edwin and Thelma Rider. The family was unable to locate their doctor for his birth that morning, so Bud was delivered by the local veterinarian.
Bud grew up in Vancouver, in Limber’s Funeral Home on 14th and Main. His parents owned the funeral home at the time. At the age of 3, Bud and Annabelle were neighbors and played together often. They went to school together all the way through high school. They finally began dating when they were seniors at Vancouver High School. After graduating, Bud joined the Navy to serve his country during WWII. After his return, he and Annabelle married on her birthday in 1947 at St. James Catholic Church. They have been happily married for over 70 years!
Bud worked for Northwest Natural Gas Company as a communications supervisor, eventually retiring in 1988 after 31 years.
Bud was a member of the American Legion, Vancouver Pops Orchestra, the Beacock’s Concert, Dance, and Swing Band, and was a charter member of Green Meadows Golf Course. He and Annabelle enjoyed spending time with their family. Many weekends, you could find Bud and Annabelle on the golf course and would always have their golf clubs with them when they traveled. He loved music and played both the clarinet and the saxophone. He also enjoyed building model trains and was HAM radio operator. His call name was W7LVH. He and Annabelle regularly joined together with their schoolmates from the Vancouver High School class of ’44 for a monthly lunch. Bud also liked dogs, especially Golden Retrievers.
Bud is survived by his loving wife, Annabelle; children, Scott (Carrie) Rider, John Rider, Mary (Chris) Ellis, and Katie (Scott) Cooley; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Bud will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25 at Touchmark at Fairway Village Senior Living, 2909 SE Village Loop, Vancouver. Military honors will be at 9:00 a.m., Monday, February 26 at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.
Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington or the charity of your choosing.

Having known Bud from the first grade through High School, playing Pinochle, and Dominoes, the Vancouver Model Railroad club, and our Class of 1944 luncheons, I couldn't have asked for a more Loyal friend.

It was a privilege to know Bud & replace him as Communications Supervisor at Northwest Natural Gas Company, in 1988.
He left a strong legacy at "Gasco" that lives on to this day.
