Remedios Sison Bacalzo

May 24, 1915December 22, 2011

Remedios S. Bacalzo preferred to be called, Reme as in “do-re-mi” and enjoyed the simple things in life. Born on May 24, 1915 in Lingayen, Pangisinan, Philippines, She passed away December 22, 2011. Reme was the second to youngest sibling of the 5 children of Inocencio and Sancha Sison. She had 2 brothers, Isabelo and Raphael (Raffy) and 2 sisters, Isabel and Mary. Reme's early upbringing was assumed by her Auntie Conchita since her Auntie had no children of her own and her parents had their hands full with their 3 other children.

Reme was a high school graduate and became a beautician for the Daisy Beauty Parlor in Manila prior to World War II. She witnessed the atrocities of war and survived the war but lost all her personal property in the process. She continued to work as a beautician and began to write a pen pal who was introduced to her by one of the other operators at her parlor. Her new pen pal was a man named Philip P. Bacalzo from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

In 1953, they made plans to meet in person since Reme had made the decision to move to America. By September of 1953 they were married. She gave birth to a son Philip S. Bacalzo in May 1954.

Her family made their home in Milwaukee, WI where she enjoyed the joys of a 4 season climate for the first time in her life, such as, having to picking her son up at school in the middle of a blizzard and sleeping in the basement during a tornado warning. She thoroughly enjoyed the local Wisconsin culture and learned all about Fish Boils, Deer Hunting Season, Ice Fishing, Bratwurst and the Green Bay Packers. She bought shares of the Packers and gave them to her granddaughter Mackenzie, daughter-in-law Grace, and her son Phil.

Reme had a green thumb and always enjoyed growing plants and flowers. She also loved to watch gymnastics and figure skating. She also enjoyed tap dancing and always expressed regret that her parents didn't allow her to pursue dancing as she wanted to.

Her husband passed away in March of 1980, and she moved to Southern California in July of 1983 to live with her son who had moved a year earlier. The years passed and she was blessed to see the birth of her only granddaughter Mackenzie who she was extremely proud of and would always be asking her son about.

Reme lived and enjoyed a simple life and always did what she could for her family.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Charles Carroll Funeral Home. 805-642-8134
