On Thursday, August 16, 2018, Doris (Dot) Elizabeth Stewart (nee Dewar) aged 91 years, passed away peacefully at Mount Tolmie Hospital in Victoria, BC. She was predeceased by her loving parents Arthur and Mary Dewar, beloved sister Geraldine (Dido) Johannson and revered brothers Roy, Stephen and Gordon.
Doris was born in Selkirk, Manitoba. In 1951 she married Gordon A. Stewart of Selkirk and they moved to Winnipeg to begin their own family. Mom gave birth to five children, four sons Jack, Robert, Neil and Ronald, a twin who died in child birth—and one beautiful daughter, June, who succumbed to whooping cough at 5 mos. and 7 days of age.
With a full household of three young boys, Doris found herself unexpectedly on her own. In the spirit of the century, she became a strong, independent woman, with significant emphasis on her independence. Despite little assistance, she upgraded her work skills and found the employment she needed to support herself and her children, first with the Manitoba Provincial government as a clerk and then, continuing to upgrade her skills, as a medical secretary with Transport Canada in Winnipeg where she remained for nearly 30 years. In that same time period she bought, maintained and sold three houses, all for the good of her family. Doris was also a dedicated life-long follower of the Anglican Church and spent many happy years worshipping with her community at St. Alban’s in Winnipeg (Fort Rouge).
Despite her accomplishments, Mom’s greatest interest in life was her family. Her memory will be treasured by her children Jack (Suzanne), Robert (Bernice) and Neil; her grandchildren Anne (Aidan) and Daniel (Kensie). Doris will also be remembered by her special niece and nephew: Geri-Lynn Thompson, husband Dave and family of Winnipeg, and Larry Johannson, wife Charlotte and family of Selkirk. Also by her steadfast sister-in-law, Olive Stewart of Charleswood in Winnipeg and nieces Marilyn Lysak (Gordon) of Roswell, NM., Maureen Couprie (Stewart) of Douglas, MB and nephew Doug Gordon of Winnipeg. In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held on a later date. Special thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at Mount Tolmie Hospital, all of whom seemed to find the time to comfort our mother in her final days. Thank you also to Dr. E. Leduc, Mom’s GP for the past ten years, who remained vigilant in his care of her to the very end.
