Melvin had the personality that always kept you enlivened and engaged. Beneath "that character" we knew as Melvin was a very loving and generous man of faith. He could dish it out but he could also take it. Both my father and I worked with him at The Advocate. And Melvin and I also umpired a number of Little League Baseball games together. Eternal rest grant unto Melvin, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Had the pleasure of working with Melvin for 27 years at the Advocate. You could hear his laugh resonate from the press room on the first floor up the dumbwaiter in the second floor of the editorial department. Always enjoyed giving him a hard time when given the opportunity. He will be missed.

Sad news for the area fastpitch world and the area umpire associations. Melvin umpired our Guadalupe fastpitch league for many of years and I may add "a very good one". He was also my mentor when I got into umpiring in the 70's for our area high school baseball programs. He showed me the ropes of how to be a great umpire. Melvin had the personality, he was professional and he had the love for the game. Your in my Hall of Fame. The Yoakum fastpitch association and myself send our condolences to the Janecka family. Rest in peace

To my second father,

You are one stubborn ole fool, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Thank you for loving me like a daughter, and I SO love you back. My life was forever blessed the day I met you. You have a heart of gold and every time I play Spades, I know you will be teasing me. Rest in peace, you incredible, incredible man. I'm eternally grateful for your love.

Love, Leigh

Going to miss Melvin. What a great guy. Used to see him almost every day when he was working at the Advocate. I even remember him umpiring baseball games. What crazy stories he told. When he left the Advocate, he would call from time to time. I know he loved his work and his family. He lived a full life and then some. He will be missed.
