Arthur Grenfell Allen

Westminster Canterbury resident Arthur G. Allen died December 22, 2011 at age 90. He was an original “Flying Sergeant”, flew in the Berlin Air Lift and retired after achieving the rank of Colonel in the United States Air Force. After retirement, he flew cargo for Universal Airlines and served as a Police Officer / Plaza Supervisor on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Arthur was very active at All Saints Episcopal Church, a member of the Kiwanis Beach-Combers Club and served as a volunteer at First Landing State Park and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Arthur is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Ann Shepherd Allen. Survivors include his three sons, Thomas L. Allen and wife Gretchen of Virginia Beach, Randall J. Allen and wife Kathy of Centreville, and Jonathan C. Allen and wife Suzy of Norfolk. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Memorial Eucharist will be held Tuesday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Church, 1969 Woodside Lane, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army. Please share your love and condolences with the family at

Arthur worked with me at the Virginia Aquarium since the very beginning. He was always the perfect gentleman and added a special touch to everything he did, from selling tickets to greeting the guests. I will always remember him with the greatest respect and fondness.
