

Virginia Beach - Carol Knapp Washburn passed away into the loving arms of God on November 5, 2017. She was born in Springfield, Mass on February 20, 1942 to Mr. and Mrs. Ellison and Meda Knapp. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Washburn; her mother, Meda; father, Ellison; brother, Edwin Knapp; and sisters, Norma Brownell and Marilyn Knapp.
Carol loved life and her family. She was a stay at home mother raising her 3 children, William "Billy" Washburn (wife Lisa), Jeffrey A. Washburn (wife Melinda) and Donna Washburn Wilhoit. Carol lived a life of service as she retired as a Teacher Assistant for Virginia Beach City Public Schools at Princess Anne Elementary, while also serving the community and church as a volunteer at VA Beach General Hospital, Va. Beach United Methodist Church Potters House, member of the Eastern Star, the Va. Beach Fire Dept Ladies Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, and as a volunteer for Open Door Chapel.
Carol was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, married to her loving husband Robert for over 56 years. She is survived by her children mentioned above, Grandchildren, Catherine Wilhoit, Matthew Washburn, Jenna Washburn, Jarrett Washburn; and brothers Robert Knapp and wife, Jackie, Don Knapp and wife, Zarada, Walter Knapp and wife, Lou; brother-in-law, Don Washburn and wife, Jan; and sister-in-law, Nancy Wold and husband, Mike.
She is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews. Carol was a member of Va. Beach United Methodist Church for 59 years as well as attending Open Door Chapel with her friends. She had a firm belief in Christ and cherished her family especially at family gatherings in her home during the holidays. She was well known for her famous apple cakes to which we are now hoping to find her secret recipe and carry on her tradition.
Carol was fortunate to have loving friendships with Elizabeth Halstead for 40 years; Moni Gilder, Teenie Duke, and her special care giver, Milly Richey.
A memorial service will be held at VA Beach United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 212 19th Street, VA Beach, VA. A reception will follow the service at Carol's house. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VA Beach Rescue Squad, Station 14.
